Q: I prefer outdoor exercise to indoor. So what should
I do when the snow piles up?
How about snowshoeing? It’s really easy to learn—just like hiking, but you have an extra bit of traction built right into the snowshoe. You’ll get a super cardiovascular and full-body workout. If you find that your lung capacity is a little lower while running in the snow, it’s because you’re actually working harder to trudge through the white stuff. So don’t panic. Be extra careful, and if you want, you can use hiking poles if you are on uneven ground or on hills. Aluminum snowshoes can be found at most sporting-good stores like Mountain Equipment Co-op (mec.ca) for about $200 and up.
Q: I get dry skin in the winter. Help!
Rough, dry, scaly or flaky skin is not uncommon in the winter. The harsh elements and dry heating systems are contributing factors. Drink loads of water to stay hydrated—did you know your body depletes as much water in the winter as it does in the summer months? You might want to consider taking a fish-oil or flaxseed-oil supplement, which can help to keep the skin moisturized. I take O3mega (a Greens+ product) and put flaxseed oil in my power-shakes and flaxseeds on my cereal and yogurt; they help to alleviate dry skin usually within a couple of weeks. Also, make sure to moisturize. Lots. Your skin will be glowing afterward, especially if someone else slathers the moisturizer on for you.
Q: There are so many great gym membership deals right now. How do I choose the right one for me?
Before making a commitment, take your time and consider these questions:
1. Is the location convenient? The easier it is to get to, the more likely you are to go and workout.
2. Do you really understand the financial agreement or the contract? Read the fine print and find out the terms for cancelling or putting your membership on hold.
3. Does the gym have the equipment, classes and amenities you need? Ask for a guest pass or a one-week complimentary pass to try out the facilities.
4. Does the gym have qualified personal trainers on hand? They are invaluable, especially if you are inexperienced with the gym.
5. What are the operating hours? Does it suit your schedule?
6. What is the clientele like? Will you feel comfortable pumping iron around beefy shirtless men? Or cycling alongside women in full-out Lululemon gear?
