You don’t need a massage table, you don’t need Enya and you most certainly don’t need a sheet when you try these professional massage moves on your sweetheart at home.
Back It Up
With a back rub, Rodney Osinga, a Toronto massage therapist, warns against getting too frisky too quickly. Set aside 15 to 20 minutes and think circles. With one hand on either side of the spine, massage outwards to the sides, move downward a little, then massage back toward the edge of the spine to complete the circle pattern. The move should take a laid-back five to eight seconds. Move up or down an inch and repeat until you’ve covered the whole back.
If your fingers get tired, switch to forearms, palms or even knuckles.
Head Games
Want to get inside your partner’s head? Start on the outside. Osinga describes the scalp massage as “like you’re washing their hair.” The Karate Kid-style mantra is “Fingers together and then fingers out.” “You’re squeezing your fingers together like you’re picking up a pen and then pushing them out, spreading your fingers wide slowly as you’re putting pressure on the scalp and moving around in circles,” he says. You can also squeeze their ears, gently stroke the temples or massage the ridge above the bottom of the hairline.
Great Feets
Time to tickle some toes! Kristen Schiener, a certified reflexologist in Toronto, says to relieve stress in the shoulders, find the reflex area below where your baby toe meets your foot. Press that spot with your thumb in a pulsing motion. “If people are having problems with impotence or fertility, reflexology is wonderful for stimulating the function of organs,” says Schiener. Also, to relax the lower back, work the fleshy dent just above the heel behind the Achilles tendon. But don’t press too hard—this is often a sensitive area.
