Q: My fiancée and I are both teachers and off for the summer. We’d like to explore Canada. How do you recommend getting around?
Try Air Canada’s East-West flight pass, starting at $3,590. It’s good for 10 flights to destinations as far east as Québec and as far west as British Columbia over a one-year period. A Cross Canada pass is also available, good for 10 flights to all provinces over a one-year period, starting at $4,240. If money is an issue, consider taking the train. It’s a great (and more economical) way to see the country. Via Rail offers a Canrailpass for $837, good for unlimited travel over 30 days from June 1 to October 15.
Q: What’s this I hear about babymoons?
It’s a new buzzword in travel circles, with one survey estimating that 59 percent of expectant couples will opt for a babymoon. The idea is that just before baby makes his or her debut, parents-to-be book one last vacation fling. Spas and resorts are popular picks for indulging in some pre-diaper dalliances. Q: I have to spend two weeks alone in Europe for business. Any solo travel safety advice you can share?
A healthy dose of paranoia is always a good thing, no matter who or where you are. Always keep an eye on your stuff and keep essentials (passport, money, credit cards) out of the reach of pickpockets. Guys should put wallets into front pockets, and women should carry zippered shoulder bags strapped across their body. Take safety steps in hotels, such as putting the “Do not disturb” sign on the door when you leave to ward off thieves. Read up on where the unsavoury parts of a city are, or ask at your hotel. Women may also find that if there’s a ring on their wedding finger, men hassle less.
Q: I’ve had vacations almost ruined by overaggressive vendors. What’s the best way to handle them?
In some destinations, you may feel like a big, fat walking wallet besieged by anyone who’s selling something. Wherever I go, I learn how to say “No, thank you” in the local language and I say it firmly.
I also wear sunglasses so that I can look at merchandise without vendors seeing me as a potential customer. For those just looking for a money handout, I occasionally give a little something—a pen, pack of crayons or a ball that I buy beforehand at a dollar store.
