5 Ways to Make Yourself a Great Driver

  1. Look up, way up. Good drivers all start here, since it gives you crucial time to anticipate rather than react. If you can’t read a highway sign or see two or more lights ahead of you on a straight city street, you’re not looking up far enough.
  2. Make sure everyone buckles up properly. Most drivers use their seat belt,* but great drivers ensure that kids are also strapped in appropriately for their sizes too.
  3. Always have an out. Know where the free space is around you, just in case something goes wrong.
  4. Drive smoothly. It’s easier on your car and improves passenger** comfort.
  5. Don’t talk on the phone. Or text*** or email while driving.
*Women buckle up more often (93.9%) than men (89.8%).
**One-third of spouses or partners are guilty of back seat driving.
***One in three 18- to 34-year-olds text while driving.
