5 Ways to Make Yourself a Great Driver
By Michael Bettencourt
- Look up, way up. Good drivers all start here, since it gives you crucial time to anticipate rather than react. If you can’t read a highway sign or see two or more lights ahead of you on a straight city street, you’re not looking up far enough.
- Make sure everyone buckles up properly. Most drivers use their seat belt,* but great drivers ensure that kids are also strapped in appropriately for their sizes too.
- Always have an out. Know where the free space is around you, just in case something goes wrong.
- Drive smoothly. It’s easier on your car and improves passenger** comfort.
- Don’t talk on the phone. Or text*** or email while driving.
*Women buckle up more often (93.9%) than men (89.8%). **One-third of spouses or partners are guilty of back seat driving. ***One in three 18- to 34-year-olds text while driving.
