Renovate, that is. Kitchen and bathroom renos always add value (see "
Reno Recoup"). Here are some trends to consider incorporating in your plans for these spaces.
THE KITCHEN
How do you use the space? It’s not just a place to cook and eat; it’s also a place to socialize and entertain, do your bills, work on the computer, watch TV and store things, and it can even serve a dual role as the laundry room. Consider these points when you start to renovate:
- As part of the hot trend toward unfitted kitchens, choose open shelving, drawers and cabinets or introduce individual pieces—like an armoire or a kitchen island made out of an antique piece—to make up the kitchen “furniture.”
- Choose appliances that are Energy Star rated and multi-functional.
- Incorporate organic shapes, such as wood and stone countertops and tabletops with edges that look unfinished.
- For dining and task lighting, use layered lighting to highlight the space.
- Have specific storage for tableware, gadgets, pots and cooking accessories.
THE BATHROOM
The trend of having a spa at home continues, but making it more personal is the key to doing a renovation that is beneficial and adds resale value. Here are some tips:
- Think about adding high-end antique or modern pieces of furniture instead of traditional bathroom cabinetry.
- Bring on the tech: Consider a steam shower system or heated floors.
- Use multiple types of tiles, such as glass, ceramic and stone.
- Consider brushed nickel for taps and hardware.
- Install low-flow toilets, which are more efficient and eligible for a rebate in many cities.
