I think of a road trip as a chance to pull out all my old favourites, thus the abundance of so many retro gems on my list. In another context I might gravitate to more obscure songs, but I think familiarity is a key factor in good road song selection. Marrying the right music with a particular stretch of scenery and inspiring my husband to sing along while he’s driving are always the highlights of my trip.

It’s great to be on the road listening to whole CDs, just like the old days when I was a kid. These days, we’ve been playing the new Saul Williams record [The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust]. One of our kids loves it, while one of them hates it. It makes for an, um, interesting ride.

The Beatles mixes we make are always perfect for the kids too.
