Food Tricks
Get a selection of olives, dips, and antipasti from a local market, and whip up a few simple snacks--prepare them ahead of time so they're ready to serve when the first guest arrives.

Create a tempting food table: Use colourful burlap to cover weather-worn patio furniture. Straw beach mats ($4 each at IKEA) provide a backdrop -- a quick way to secure the mats is with duct tape or a staple gun. Use wooden candle pillars and lanterns to create height and visual interest. For a spectacular presentation of appetizers, arrange nibblies on a large decorative tray.
Save money on paper and plastic: Bring your china, crystal and flatware outside. Jasper Conran for WEDGWOOD fine bone china mug and plates were used at this party.
The Vintage Tasting Collection by WATERFORD CRYSTAL features eight shapes of glasses created to enhance the flavour of the wine as it passes from glass to palate. Edward served a selection of Two Oceans wine.
Don't be afraid to buy pre-made dips and antipasti. It'll save you a lot of prep time.
Stop and Go Quesadillas: Lay a tortilla on a baking sheet. Cover with a layer of shredded cheese (1/2 bag), diced mixed peppers and another layer of remaining cheese. Top with another tortilla and press firmly with palm to stick. Bake for 7 to 10 minutes at 350F, or until cheese is melted through. Let cool, cut into small 1/8 wedges.
Prosciutto with Arugula Twigs: Place 2 to 3 arugula leaves on top of prosciutto and roll tightly around the crostini, wrapping in leaves as you go. Leave 1/2 inch of ham at end to seal. Arrange on plate, sealed side down. Keep cool. Use a balsamic vinaigrette as a dipping sauce, or try spicy mustard or honey mustard.
Arrange blanched, chilled asparagus in chilled ceramic mugs. Serve with a dipping sauce, such as a salad dressing or lemon-flavoured HELLMAN's mayonnaise.
Get creative when serving nibblies. Edward used candlestick holders to contain toothpicks and olive pits, as well as crystal votives to hold dipping sauces.
